Tonight I watched Willy Wonka and the Chocoalte Factory for the first time in years. WTF. No wonder that movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Gene Wilder is a lunatic candy maker that lures children into his uber dangerous candy factory where their lives are endangered at every turn. And could the Oomp Loompas be any creepier? They're orange!
It's funny to me how many classic kid flicks are totally traumatic. My toddler just watched the Wizard of Oz for the first time and it struck me that Dorothy murders not one, but two people. Granted, they're witches, but still! And she doesn't just murder them, she parties like a rock star afterwards. That is messed up. No wonder Judy Garland had a drinking problem.
Want to write a classic children's story? Just throw in a mad man, disobedient children, and a serial killer and presto! You have a classic tale.
I may start a second blog for children--deathmonkeyandcandycorn.blog. Sure it will be a hit.

Completely agree on WW. The train/tunnel ride was scary to me as a child. Like the blog.

Another weird kid movie is Labrynth with David Bowie. Bowie is a make-up wearing muppet king that kidnaps a baby, a baby!, and sort of seduces in underage girl. Man, I loved that movie when I was a kid and just watched some of the "music videos" on you tube the other night. Can't wait to terrorize my kids with it.
